This agricultural management style was based on production by tenant farmers, and involved parasitic landlords (most of whom owned leased land outside their residential area) who did not farm themselves but based their livelihood on rent. It emerged during the Edo period and was recognized as a system by the land tax reform. It was established in the 1900s, and the rate of tenanted land reached 45%. It showed signs of instability after the rural depression of the early Showa period, but dominated Japanese rural areas until it was dismantled by the postwar land reform. It played a transitional role in the transition from feudalism to capitalism, and was an inseparable part of the structural foundation of Japanese capitalism based on low wages.

自らは農業を営まず小作料収入を生活の基礎とする寄生地主（大部分は居住地外に貸付地をもつ不在地主）が形成され，小作人による生産が基本となった農業経営形態。江戸時代に発生し地租改正で制度的に承認され，1900年代に確立，小作地率は45％に達した。昭和初期の農村恐慌以後，動揺を示したが，戦後の農地改革で解体されるまで日本の農村を支配。封建制から資本制へ移行する過渡期的な役割を担いつつ，低賃金を基礎として日本資本主義の構造基底部として不可分の関係にあった。
