This agricultural management style was based on production by tenant farmers, and involved parasitic landlords (most of whom owned leased land outside their residential area) who did not farm themselves but based their livelihood on rent. It emerged during the Edo period and was recognized as a system by the land tax reform. It was established in the 1900s, and the rate of tenanted land reached 45%. It showed signs of instability after the rural depression of the early Showa period, but dominated Japanese rural areas until it was dismantled by the postwar land reform. It played a transitional role in the transition from feudalism to capitalism, and was an inseparable part of the structural foundation of Japanese capitalism based on low wages. → Related topics Tenant system | Local merchants | Landlords | Japan | Agriculture Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
