Sanicula chinensis Bunge

Japanese: ウマノミツバ(英語表記)Sanicula chinensis Bunge
Sanicula chinensis Bunge
A perennial plant of the Umbelliferae family that grows in the shade of trees in the mountains (illustration). It is large, similar to Japanese honewort, and is called Umanomitsuba or Oni-mitsuba because it has no fragrance. The stem grows to a height of 40-90cm and branches at the top. The plant is almost hairless. The leaves at the base are 3-5 lobed and have long stalks, while those at the top of the stem are 3 lobed and have short stalks. From July to September, it produces small umbels at the ends of the branches and bears small white flowers. There are male and bisexual flowers; male flowers have short stalks and grow around the inflorescence, while bisexual flowers have no stalk and are in the center.
