There are two ways of thinking about offering tea. Until the Edo period, offering tea to nobles was called kencha. It originated in 815 (Kōnin 6) when Daisōzu Nagatada offered tea to Emperor Saga during his visit to Bonshakuji Temple in Karasaki, Omi (Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture) (Nihon Kōki). Later, in 1585 (Tenshō 13), Toyotomi Hideyoshi held a tea ceremony in the Imperial Palace to celebrate his appointment as regent and offered tea to Emperor Ogimachi, establishing the meaning of kencha. However, since the Meiji period, offering tea to shrines and temples by the head of a family has come to be called kencha. Nowadays, there are cases where the offering in front of a god is called "kencha" and the offering in front of a Buddha is called "kyucha."
