It is used as an auxiliary verb. To do something completely. To finish something. To be completely done. “To be astonished,” “To be troubled,” etc. ※Utsubo (c. 970-999), Naishi-no-taku: “As he visited her, she became dismayed at my presence.” ※Genji (c. 1001-14), Kiritsubo: “I thought that he would end his life if he saw that things had not turned out this way.” [Glossary] (1) “Owaru” is a synonym. Basically, the difference is that "owaru" originally means the end of an ongoing action or function, while "hateru" originally means the reaching of an end to a limited object or period of time.
(2) In the Heian period, with the exception of a few examples such as the Buddhist term "myōjū" (end of life ) being read as "inochi owaru" (end of life) in kana writing, "hateru" was used exclusively, while in Chinese readings "owaru" was used, showing a distinction in usage according to style.

(2)平安時代には、仮名文では「心にむせび侍りつつ命終り侍りなば」〔源氏‐薄雲〕のような仏教語、「命終(みょうじゅう)」を訓読した「いのちおわる」などの一部の例をのぞき、もっぱら「はてる」を用い、一方、漢文訓読文では「おわる」を用いるという文体による使いわけが見られる。

はて【果】
