A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family (APG classification: Cyperaceae). It grows 10-20 cm tall, with hard leaves about 5 mm wide. It is dioecious, and produces spikes of 4-6 cm at the end of the stem in April-June. The hard vesicles are about 1 cm long, and grow long at the tip. The rhizome grows long, and old scale leaves (rinpenyo) decompose at the nodes and remain in fibrous form. It is also called fudekusa (brush grass) because it resembles a brush. It commonly grows on sandy beaches on the west coast of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and often grows in clusters. It is a representative species of coastal plant and is sometimes used for erosion control. Outside of Japan, it is distributed in the Korean Peninsula and China. C. macrocephala Willd. is distributed from northeastern Hokkaido to the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk and on the west coast of North America. It resembles Kobomugi, but can be distinguished by its significantly curved fruit follicles.
