A passerine bird of the family Muscicapidae (illustration). It is about 30 cm long and is the largest of the thrushes in Japan. The upper part of the body has numerous black crescent spots on a yellowish brown background, and from the throat to the belly, black crescent spots are scattered on a dirty white background. There are thick white and black horizontal stripes on the underside of the wings, which are very noticeable when flying. It is widely distributed from Siberia to Southeast Asia and Australia, and in Japan it lives as a migratory bird in various places from Hokkaido to Kyushu. It prefers dark forests with a thick undergrowth layer of shrubs, and since it often settles within the forest, it is relatively rare to see it.
