...In Japan, it has recently come to be used on Pacific saury pole-hold net fishing boats to transfer catches into the hold of the boat. In the 1950s, the Soviet Union developed a netless fishing method in the Caspian Sea, where they used fishing lights to attract kirika (a small fish similar to herring) and then used a fish pump to catch them, and reportedly caught 100,000 tons of them a year. They also tested the same fishing method on Pacific saury, and succeeded in catching several tons in an hour, with a maximum of 1.5 tons in nine minutes. *Some of the terminology used to refer to "netless fishing" is listed below.
