Died April 28, 1896. Berlin, Germany. A German historian, he became a lecturer at the University of Leipzig in 1858, but resigned in support of Prussian power politics. He became a professor at the University of Freiburg in 1863, then at the University of Kiel (1866) and at the University of Heidelberg (1867), and after the retirement of L. Ranke, he became a professor at the University of Berlin (1874). He also served as editor of the Prussian Annals from 1866 to 1889, which was based on the idea of ​​a Little Germany, and as a member of the Imperial Diet from 1871 to 1888, and as the editor of the German national history in 1886, succeeding Ranke. As a collaborator of Bismarck, he encouraged the idea of ​​a powerful state and was hostile towards Catholics and socialists. Externally, he was a hardliner who advocated the overseas development of Germany, and had a great influence abroad, and was considered a representative thinker of German militarism by foreigners. His main works include "Deutsche Geschichte im 19. Jahrhundert" (History of Germany in the 19th Century) (5 volumes, 74-94) and "Historical and Political Essays" (Historische und politische Aufsätze) (4 volumes, 65-97).

Jahrhundert (5巻,74~94) ,『歴史・政治論集』 Historische und politische Aufsätze (4巻,65~97) 。
