Ichimokudai - Ichimokudai

In the Middle Ages, a magistrate handled the affairs of the market within a manor. In large markets where many merchants from outside the manor gathered in addition to the resident merchants, a caretaker was needed to handle the affairs of the market, and Ichimokudai were often selected from among the merchants who lived within the manor and appointed by the manor lord. In particular, during the Muromachi period, they were often seen in manors in the west part of Japan. Similar to Ichimokudai were Ichibasatanin, Ichibahoto, Ichiazukari, and Bugyo.

中世、荘園(しょうえん)内にある市場(いちば)の事務を処理する代官。定住の商人のほかに、荘園外からの商人が多数集まる大きな市場には、その市場の事務を処理する世話役が必要であったが、市目代は多くは荘園内に定住する商人から選ばれ、荘園領主から任命された。とくに室町時代になると、西国にある荘園内で多くみられた。市目代と同様のものとして、市庭沙汰人(いちばさたにん)、市庭保頭(ほがしら)、市預(いちあずかり)、市奉行(ぶぎょう)などがある。
