Suga Gendo - Kangendo

…A Confucian scholar in the early Edo period. Gendo was a given name. His pen name was Shitoku, and his pen name was Tokuan. He is often called Kan, an abbreviation of his family name Sugawara, which is a Chinese-style one-character surname. He was from Harima. At the age of 24, he went to Kyoto and studied Confucianism under Fujiwara Seika. He was known for his erudition, and was considered a brilliant scholar of Seika's school, on a par with Hayashi Razan, Hori Kyoan, Nawa Katsusho, and Matsunaga Shakugo. On June 14, 1628, he was killed by his disciple Yasuda Ansho. According to Nakae Toju, Gendo was only proud of his erudition, but had a bad personality, and he mistreated Ansho, which earned him his resentment. …

…江戸初期の儒者。玄同は名。字は子徳，号は得庵。姓の菅原を中国風の一字姓に略して，菅（かん）と呼ばれることが多い。播磨の人。24歳のとき京都に出て，医学を修めるかたわら，藤原惺窩（せいか）に入門して儒学を学んだ。博学をもって聞こえ，林羅山，堀杏庵，那波活所，松永尺五と並ぶ惺窩門の俊才と称される。1628年6月14日，門人の安田安昌に斬殺された。中江藤樹の伝えるところによれば，玄同は博学を誇るのみで人柄がよくなく，安昌を虐待したので，その恨みを買ったのであるという。…
