…In opposition to naturalism, the Neo-Romantic movement emerged, and Arthur F.E. van Schendel (1874-1946) wrote an excellent historical novel. During the interwar period, many poets and writers emerged from various schools of thought, including humanism, socialism, Catholicism, and Protestantism. Of particular note are the work of Hendrik Marsman (1899-1940), who was influenced by German Expressionism and advocated vitalism, and Simon Vestdijk (1898-1971), who transcended the boundaries of schools and displayed a vigorous creative talent for psychological and historical novels. Frank's experience of suffering under the occupation and oppression by the German army during World War II is depicted in his novel The Hiding Place (1947).…
