A gastropod snail of the family Celastridae of the class Gastropoda of the phylum Mollusca. It lives in the intertidal zone of inland bays from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu, the Korean peninsula, and China, on sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of about 10 meters. Its shell is about 15 mm high and 25 mm in diameter, with a low spiral spire and thin spiral rays that form a checkered pattern of gray and yellowish brown, but there are many color variations. Its meat is edible. A similar species, the large-sized U. costatum , lives in the open ocean.
