Toyooka Basin

A river valley basin developed at the confluence of the Maruyama River and Izushi River in northern Hyogo Prefecture. Stretching over 10 kilometers north to south and up to about 4 kilometers east to west, it is the widest alluvial lowland in Tajima. The sea once reached the area around Izushi, and the basin was subsequently formed by the deposition of the Maruyama River and Izushi River. The floodplain was a frequent flood zone until the Maruyama River improvement work was carried out from the Taisho to Showa periods. After the improvement work, land consolidation progressed and the area became fertile farmland.

兵庫県北部、円山(まるやま)川と出石(いずし)川の合流地点に発達した河谷盆地。南北10キロメートル余、東西最大約4キロメートルで、但馬(たじま)ではもっとも広い沖積低地である。かつては出石付近まで海が入り込み、その後、円山川、出石川の堆積(たいせき)作用で盆地が形成された。氾濫(はんらん)原は、大正から昭和にかけて円山川改修工事が行われるまで、水害の常襲地帯であった。改修後は耕地整理が進み、豊かな農地となった。
