Jesuit Japan News - Jesuit Japan News
This is the title given to the Japanese translation of a collection of letters sent by many missionaries who came to Japan between 1549 (Tenbun 18) and 1580 (Tensho 8) to Jesuits in India and Europe, describing the status of their missionary work. The original was published in 1598 by Evora in two volumes, and contains letters written before the establishment of the so-called annual report format (→Annual Report of the Jesuits in Japan). It reports on the achievements of schools and hospitals established by the Society of Jesus, as well as events in Japan, making it a valuable historical resource that fills the gaps in records in Japan. It was translated by Murakami Naojiro as "Christian Correspondence from Japan: Kyoto Edition" in the "Ikoku Sōsho," "Christian Annual Report Volume 1, Lower (Shimo) Edition" in the "Nagasaki Sōsho," and "Christian Correspondence from Japan: Bungo Edition" in the "Zoku Ikoku Sōsho," and the Bungo, Lower (Shimo) Edition has been reprinted in the "Shin Ikoku Sōsho."
