The city occupies the lower basin of the Maruyama River in northern Hyogo Prefecture, as well as the basin of its tributaries, the Ishikawa River and the Takeno River. Its northern end faces the Sea of Japan. It was incorporated as a city in 1950. The city center developed as a castle town for the Kyogoku clan in the early modern period. 70% of the city was burned down in the Kita-Tajima earthquake in 1925. It is a transportation hub where the San-in Main Line runs and the Kita-Kinki Tango Railway branches off, and Tajima Airport opened in 1994. The city is known for its traditional cultivation of Kiryu (koriyanagi) and the production of willow wicker baskets, and after World War II, this technology was applied to the manufacture of various types of bags, including fiber, leather, and vinyl, and its production volume accounts for 80% of the nation's total. The city is currently working to attract factories to the Toyooka Core Industrial Park. Tsuiyama, at the mouth of the Maruyama River, is a commercial and fishing port. It is one of the tourist centers of the San'in Kaigan National Park, with famous places such as Genbudo Cave, Mt. Hiyori, the ruins of Izushi Castle with its beautiful cherry blossoms, and habitats for Oriental white storks (a special natural treasure). In the north is Kinosaki Onsen, and in the west is Mt. Kannabe, where a ski resort is located. In April 2005, Kinosaki-cho, Takeno-cho, and Hidaka-cho in Kinosaki County, and Izushi-cho and Tando-cho in Izushi County were incorporated. 697.55 km2 .
