The Kievan Rus' was the political, economic and cultural centre of Russia from the mid-9th century to the mid-13th century. It is also known as Kievan Rus' or Kievan Rus'. [Establishment of the Nation] According to the oldest Russian chronicle, the Tale of Bygone Years, compiled in the early 12th century, in the mid-9th century, a powerful East Slavic tribe, the Polyanins, had settled in the middle reaches of the Dnieper River and formed a small state centered in Kiev. In the upper reaches, the Krivichis were centered around Smolensk, and further north, the Ilmen Slavs of Novgorod held sway, while the Polotsk Porochanins and others lived in Polotsk, all of which maintained loose ties through a common language, customs, beliefs, and trade.
