Miyazu Bay

Japanese: 宮津湾 - みやづわん
Miyazu Bay

Miyazu Bay is a branch bay in the northwest of Kyoto Prefecture, occupying the westernmost tip of Wakasa Bay in the Sea of Japan. It is about 9 kilometers north to south and 1.5 to 2.5 kilometers east to west. The coast is a submerged coastline, and on the west side in particular, a fault cliff runs steeply from the northeast to the southwest of the Tango (Okutango) Peninsula. Amanohashidate, a sandbar formed by coastal currents flowing through the bay, stretches from the west coast, separating Miyazu Bay from the inland sea of Asokai. At the inner part of the bay is Miyazu Port, which flourished as a port of call on the Nishimawari shipping route during the Edo period.

The sandbar was created over many years by sand carried by the wind and tides in Miyazu Bay. The photo shows the view from the Ejiri side, with Asoumi Sea on the right. A forest of over 7,000 black pine trees stretches out to the opposite shore in a beautiful green belt. It is part of the Tango-Amanohashidate-Oeyama Quasi-National Park and is one of the "Three Views of Japan."
