Cold Hell [Hot Spring] - Kannojigoku

Japanese: 寒ノ地獄[温泉] - かんのじごく

This cold spring is located in Kuju Town, Kuju County, central Oita Prefecture. It is located in Chojabaru, which occupies a corner of the Handa Plateau at the northern foot of Mount Kuju. It has been known since ancient times, and is described as a "cold spring" in the Bungo Kokushi, and was commonly known as "ice hell." It is a hydrogen sulfide spring, 14°C. Bathing in the cold spring and then warming the body in a heated room is known as cold and hot therapy, and it is said to be effective against all kinds of illnesses, so many people come from far away to recuperate. There is an inn, and it is also used as a base for climbing Mount Kuju. [Katsume Shinobu]

大分県中部，玖珠郡九重（くじゆう）町にある冷泉。九重山北麓の飯田（はんだ）高原の一角を占める長者原（ちようじやばる）にある。古くから知られ，《豊後国志》には〈寒泉〉とあり，俗に〈氷地獄〉とも呼ばれていた。硫化水素泉，14℃。冷泉に身を浴し，つぎに暖房室で体を暖める，いわゆる冷温療法で，万病によく効くといわれ，遠くから療養に訪れる人が多い。一軒宿があり，九重山登山基地としても利用される。【勝目忍】
