1782‐1863 A French medical scientist, he established public health as social medicine in 19th century France. He used surveys and statistics to shed light on the social pathologies that arose during the progress of industrialization, and represents one of the perspectives that French medicine had reached at the time: that social problems could be solved by medicine. He entered military service as a physician in 1804, and was commissioned as a military surgeon in 1814, working as a surgeon. After the fall of Napoleon, he became a practicing physician, but around 1818 he became disillusioned with the practice of medicine and began researching public health and statistics.
