Flowers of the Heart

Flowers of the Heart

Founded by Sasaki Nobutsuna in February 1898 (Meiji 31), this is the oldest poetry magazine in the world of waka poetry. In the first few years, it had a lot of interaction with the old school and the Negishi school, but from 1904 (Meiji 37), it became the official journal of the Chikuhaku Society, which was presided over purely by Nobutsuna. After Nobutsuna's death in 1963 (Showa 38), it was run mainly by Sasaki Yuki (1914-2011) and Yukitsuna, and reached its 1000th issue in February 1982. There is a complete reprint of the Meiji period edition. Based on the spirit of "wide, deep, and true to one's own beliefs" advocated by Nobutsuna, such people as Ishikure Chimata, Kawada Jun, Kinoshita Rigen, Arai Akira (1833-1925), Katayama Hiroko (pen name Matsumura Mineko), Yanagihara Byakuren, Kujo Takeko, Kurihara Kiyoko (1898-1965), Ishikawa Fujiko (1933-2020), Takeyama Hiroshi (1920-2010), Ito Kazuhiko (1943-), Tanioka Akira (1959- In addition to producing a diverse range of poets such as Takayoshi Noriyoshi, Tawara Machi, and others, Maekawa Samio, Saito Ryu (1879-1953), Goto Shigeru, Goto Miyoko, and Yamashita Mutsu branched out and were active during the Showa period.
