A town in Tagawa County in the north-central part of Fukuoka Prefecture. Located in the center of the Chikuho coalfields, it became a coal mining town in the mid-Meiji period. The Heisei Chikuho Railway runs through the town. From around 1960, coal mines began to close one after another, resulting in many workers losing their jobs. Since then, rice farming, vegetable cultivation, and livestock farming have become established as part of measures to promote the coal-producing region. Area: 8.04 km2 . Population: 9,617 (2010).
