A former town in Minamikoma County, in the southernmost part of Yamanashi Prefecture. It occupies a mountainous area on the right bank of the Fuji River. It produces cedar and cypress trees. Its specialties include tea and ginger. National Route 52 runs through the town, and many people commute to Fujinomiya and other industrial areas in Shizuoka Prefecture.
