The largest domestic natural gas company. Founded in 1941 under the Teikoku Oil Company Act as a special company for domestic oil development, it has come to control most of the domestic oil fields through the absorption and merger of other companies' oil mining divisions. After World War II, the act was abolished in 1950 and the company became a private company. As a result of separating and transferring part of its oil resource survey and exploration division to the special corporation Japan Petroleum Resources Development, which was established in 1955, the company shifted its focus from crude oil to natural gas. In addition to extracting oil in Akita and Niigata, and natural gas in Niigata and Chiba, the company is also engaged in exploration activities in Southeast Asia and Africa. It has a capital and business alliance with Nippon Oil Mitsubishi (now Nippon Oil Corporation). In April 2006, the company merged with INPEX Corporation to establish and list a joint holding company, INPEX Holdings, Inc. Headquarters in Tokyo. Capital in 2011 was 290.8 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 943 billion yen. Sales composition (%) is crude oil 59, natural gas 36, others 5. 国産天然ガス最大手。1941年帝国石油株式会社法により国内石油開発の特殊会社として設立，他社石油鉱業部門の吸収・合併などにより国内油田の大半をその支配下に置く。第２次大戦後の1950年同法廃止で民間企業となった。1955年設立の特殊法人石油資源開発へ石油資源の調査・試掘部門の一部を分離・譲渡した結果，事業の中心を原油から天然ガスに移行。秋田，新潟の石油，新潟，千葉の天然ガスを採掘するほか，東南アジア，アフリカで探鉱活動を行っている。日石三菱（現・新日本石油）と資本・業務提携している。2006年４月，国際石油開発［株］と経営統合し共同持株会社の国際石油開発帝石ホールディングス［株］を設立・上場した。本社東京。2011年資本金2908億円，2011年３月期売上高9430億円。売上構成（％）は，原油59，天然ガス36，その他５。海外売上比率39％。
