Ranchi is a mining and industrial city in the southern part of Bihar state in northeastern India. It is the administrative capital of the Ranchi district. It is located at an altitude of 660m on the eastern part of the Chotanagpur Plateau. With the Chotanagpur Plateau, the richest in mineral resources in the country, close to the plateau, it developed into a heavy industrial city after independence. In particular, from the 1960s, the Coal Corporation and the Hindustan Iron and Steel Company moved in and produced locomotives and other large machinery. Cotton and tea are traded and silk textiles are produced. It is home to Ranchi University and is the center of education and research in the Chotanagpur region. Population: 598,498 (1991).
