Father - Shinpu (English spelling)

A general honorific for clergy used in the Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, etc. The original meaning is "father" and it has been used for leaders within the church since the early church, but now it is used especially for those who hold the rank of priest. In contrast, "brother" and "sister" are used for monks and nuns who have not been ordained as priests, and "mother" is used for the superior of a female religious order.

ローマ・カトリック教会、東方正教会などで用いられる、聖職者への一般的尊称。原語は「父」の意で、初代教会以来、教会内の指導者に対して用いられてきたが、現在では、とくに司祭の地位にある人への尊称となっている。これに対して、司祭に叙階されていない修道士や修道女には、「ブラザー（兄弟）」「シスター（姉妹）」、また女子修道会の上長には「マザー（母）」の尊称が用いられる。
