Powell, R.

...American black jazz pianist known as Bud Powell. His real name was Earl Powell. He was a pioneer of modern piano. He grew up in a musical family in New York, studied classical music from an early age, and dropped out of high school to become a professional. He initially modeled his playing after Earl Hines and Art Tatum, but around 1941, while frequenting clubs in Harlem, he was inspired by the playing of Thelonious Monk, and created an innovative piano style based on the bebop idiom, which attracted attention.
