French pantomime actor. Born in Bohemia as the son of a traveling performer. He returned to Paris with his troupe around 1814, and after playing a minor role as an acrobat at the Théâtre de Fenambule, he gradually gained popularity around 1825 as a clown in pantomimes. He freely expressed melancholy emotions with flexible gestures and facial expressions, and had great successes in works such as La rouge d'or (1828) and Pierrot d'Afrique (1842), which earned him the acclaim of literary figures such as Charles Nodier and George Sand. His son Charles Deburau (1829-73) followed in his father's footsteps. [Ando Shinya] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
