Jean-Batiste Gaspard Deburau

French pantomime actor. Born in Bohemia as the son of a traveling performer. He returned to Paris with his troupe around 1814, and after playing a minor role as an acrobat at the Théâtre de Fenambule, he gradually gained popularity around 1825 as a clown in pantomimes. He freely expressed melancholy emotions with flexible gestures and facial expressions, and had great successes in works such as La rouge d'or (1828) and Pierrot d'Afrique (1842), which earned him the acclaim of literary figures such as Charles Nodier and George Sand. His son Charles Deburau (1829-73) followed in his father's footsteps.

フランスのパントマイム役者。旅芸人の子としてボヘミアで生まれる。一座とともに1814年ごろパリに帰り、フュナンビュール座で軽業(かるわざ)の端役を演じたのち、25年ごろから黙劇のピエロ役でしだいに人気を集めた。柔軟な身ぶりと表情によって哀愁に満ちた感情を自由に表現し、『金の夢』（1828）や『アフリカのピエロ』（1842）などで大当りをとり、シャルル・ノディエやジョルジュ・サンドなどの文学者にも絶賛された。その子シャルルCharles Deburau（1829―73）も父の後を継いだ。
