Ichthyosaurus

Japanese: イクチオサウルス（英語表記）Ichthyosaurus

A marine, carnivorous reptile belonging to the order Ichthyosaurus. A complete specimen from the Jurassic of Holzmaden, Germany, has revealed its body shape and skeleton. Its body shape is very similar to that of a modern-day dolphin. Its skull is also dolphin-like, with a long, protruding snout and many sharp teeth. It has large eye sockets and a scleral ring. It has an irregular caudal fin. It has no scales and is ovoviviparous. It is a representative example of the ichthyosaurs.

魚竜群魚竜目に属する，海生，肉食の爬虫類。ドイツのホルツマーデンのジュラ系産の完全な標本から体形，骨格が明瞭になった。体形は今日のイルカによく似ている。頭骨もイルカ状で吻部は細長く突出し，多くの鋭利な歯をもっている。眼窩は大きく，鞏 (きょう) 膜骨輪がある。尾鰭は不等形。鱗はなく，卵胎生。魚竜類の代表例である。
