Old school - Koryu

A school of ikebana. One of the schools of ikebana that emerged in Edo around the Meiwa era (1764-1772) in the mid-Edo period with a style of flower arrangement. It is generally believed that Imai Isshiken Sofu was the founder of the school, but its lineage is unclear. Its students included Shoosai Ando Ryou (1735-1807), who was then succeeded by Shoseisai Sekimoto Riyu (1772-1849), who spread the name of the Koryu. Riyu published many works, including "Koryu Ikebana Hyakuhei no Zu" (1803), and worked to popularize the school, with his students spread throughout Edo, Hokuriku, and the rest of the country. Riyu was succeeded by Rion (1806-1878), who is considered the actual founder of today's Koryu. He determined the angle of inclination of the water's edge, a characteristic of the Koryu flower styles, and organized and defined the theory of Riyu, who established the Shin, Gyo, and Kusa flower styles, giving meaning to it and giving himself the title of "Koryu Ikebana Head Master." When Ikebana was in decline after the Meiji Restoration, Rien entrusted the future to the then Kanazawa head Matsumusai Kondo Risei and others, and the center of Koryu was divided into Kanto and Hokuriku, which led to a movement to separate schools and many branches were born. In the mid-Meiji period, the momentum for the revival of Ikebana led to the return to Tokyo, and in 1898 (Meiji 31), the general organization "Hanatomokai" was formed, and in the Showa period, the "National Ikebana Koryu Association" was launched, and in 1966 (Showa 41), one of these, the Koryu Shotokai, was formed as an incorporated association, and in 1971, the "Koryu Academy" was completed in Koishikawa, Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. Currently, there are 15 schools affiliated with the Koryu Association. These are the Koryu Shofuji-kai, Koryu Kayo-kai, Koryu Shou-kai, Koryu Shokei-kai, Koryu Shorei-kai, Koryu Jusho-kai, Koryu Rion-kai, Koryu Katabami-kai, Koryu Shosen-kai, Koryu Hanamori-kai, Koryu Akebono-kai, Koryu Shoto-kai, Koryu Shoho-kai, Koryu Matsumori-kai and Koryu Shoo-kai.
