University of Göttingen - Georg August-Universität

University of Göttingen - Georg August-Universität

Founded in 1737 by the Elector of Hanover, it is named Georg-August University in commemoration of his name. It is a comprehensive university in the city of Göttingen in the Federal Republic of Germany. At the time of its founding, it was modeled after the University of Halle, and played a pioneering role in the transition to modern universities, rejecting the medieval priority of theology and placing emphasis on free scientific research. The Göttingen Seven Incident (1837), in which seven professors, including the famous Brothers Grimm, left the university in conflict with the King of Hanover over constitutional issues, marked a period in the history of academic freedom. The university is also known as the birthplace of neo-humanism, and is known for having produced many talented people from the linguistics seminar taught by Johann Matthias Gesner (1691-1761) and others. As of 1995, there are 14 faculties (Theology, Law, Medicine/Dentistry, History/Philosophy, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Biology, Forestry, Agriculture, Economics, Social Sciences, and Education) with approximately 30,000 students and 2,000 faculty members.
