Born: February 15, 1817 in Paris Died February 19, 1878. A French painter and printmaker from Paris. A member of the Barbizon School. He traveled to Italy from 1835 to 1836, and exhibited his works at the Paris Salon from 1838 onwards, starting with "Notre Dame de Paris". In 1840 he painted historical paintings under P. Delaroche, but quit after six months and thereafter devoted himself to landscape painting. In 1853, his work was purchased by the emperor, and he established himself as a painter. In the same year, influenced by his close friend J. Corot, he began to paint outdoors, and from 1857 he set up a studio on a small boat and painted along the Oise and Seine rivers, leaving behind works that excel in depicting water. Of all the Barbizon School painters, he had the greatest influence on the Impressionists. His most famous work is "The Banks of the Oise" (1872).
