This museum is located in Brussels. It was established by a government decree (1799) during the period when Belgium was under the rule of the French Revolutionary government, which established a museum in each of the 15 departments. The original collection consisted of works confiscated by the French army from local churches, monasteries, and secular public facilities, as well as 17th- and 18th-century French and Italian paintings sent from the Central Museum of Fine Arts in Paris. In 1816, after the fall of Napoleon, works returned by the French government were added. In 1887, the museum moved from the old palace to its current building, built in a neoclassical style between 1876 and 1885. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
