This museum is located in Brussels. It was established by a government decree (1799) during the period when Belgium was under the rule of the French Revolutionary government, which established a museum in each of the 15 departments. The original collection consisted of works confiscated by the French army from local churches, monasteries, and secular public facilities, as well as 17th- and 18th-century French and Italian paintings sent from the Central Museum of Fine Arts in Paris. In 1816, after the fall of Napoleon, works returned by the French government were added. In 1887, the museum moved from the old palace to its current building, built in a neoclassical style between 1876 and 1885.

ブリュッセルにある美術館。ベルギーがフランス革命政府の支配下にあった時期に，15の県に美術館を設けるという政令(1799)により発足した。当初の収集は，フランス軍により地元の教会堂や修道院，世俗的公共施設から接収された作品と，パリの中央美術館から送られた17～18世紀のフランス，イタリアの絵画で構成されていた。さらにナポレオン失脚後の1816年，フランス政府から返却された作品も加えられる。87年には，それまでの旧宮殿から1876‐85年建設の新古典主義様式の現在の建物に移った。
