A variety of chrysoberyl. Sometimes used as a gemstone name. It was discovered in the Ural Mountains in the early 1830s. It is greenish yellow and transparent in sunlight, but red in incandescent light. The color change is thought to be due to the presence of traces of Cr 3 + (trivalent chromium) or slightly large amounts of Fe 3 + (trivalent iron), both of which replace Al (aluminum) in the composition. Currently, this name tends to be used not only as a gemstone name, but also for all chrysoberyl that shows different colors in sunlight and incandescent light. It occurs in quartz veins in granitic pegmatites or biotite schists. It is named after Tsar Alexander II of Russia. It is the birthstone for June.
