A building used for chanting and musical performance in Greek and Roman times. In Latin it is called an odeum. The odeion built by Pericles in Athens in 442 BCE was a hypostyle hall measuring 63.4m by 41.5m, but Roman odeions had a stepped seating arrangement in concentric arcs inside, making them not much different from theaters in their construction. However, since odeions generally had a roof, they were generally smaller than theaters and were usually contained within a rectangular wall supporting the roof.
