1731‐1805 An 18th-century French orientalist known for translating the Zand Avesta and the Upanishads into French. Born in Paris, he studied Hebrew and Arabic at a seminary in the Netherlands. While studying Persian on his own at the Royal Library of Paris, he was noticed by Father Claude Salier, a professor at the Collège de France, and became acquainted with other orientalist scholars. Fascinated by copies of Sanskrit manuscripts sent by the Bodley Library at Oxford to scholars from various countries for deciphering, he traveled to Pondicherry in India in 1755, but was unable to go to Benares (Varanasi) due to colonial conflict between Britain and France. He stayed in India for six years, studied ancient Iranian, and returned home with many manuscripts. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
