An 18th-century French orientalist known for translating the Zand Avesta and the Upanishads into French. Born in Paris, he studied Hebrew and Arabic at a seminary in the Netherlands. While studying Persian on his own at the Royal Library of Paris, he was noticed by Father Claude Salier, a professor at the Collège de France, and became acquainted with other orientalist scholars. Fascinated by copies of Sanskrit manuscripts sent by the Bodley Library at Oxford to scholars from various countries for deciphering, he traveled to Pondicherry in India in 1755, but was unable to go to Benares (Varanasi) due to colonial conflict between Britain and France. He stayed in India for six years, studied ancient Iranian, and returned home with many manuscripts.

18世紀フランスの東洋学者。〈ザンド･アベスター〉〈ウパニシャッド〉をフランス語に訳したことで知られる。パリに生まれ，オランダの神学校でヘブライ語，アラビア語を学んだ。パリ王立図書館でペルシア語を独学している姿をコレージュ･ド･フランス教授クロード･サリエ神父に注目され東洋学者たちの知遇を得た。オックスフォード･ボドリー図書館が各国学者に解読依頼のため送ったサンスクリット写本のコピーに魅せられ，1755年インドのポンディシェリに赴いたが，イギリスとフランスの植民地抗争のためベナレス(ワーラーナシー)に行けず，6年間インドに滞在し古代イラン語を学んで帰国，多くの写本をもたらした。
