As a sequela of herpes zoster, it occurs in the first division of the trigeminal nerve and the intercostal nerve. The pain is persistent and sharp, and although painkillers and anticonvulsants such as carbamazepine are administered or nerve blocks are used, it is intractable and can sometimes last for more than a year.
