An ancient Athenian. A beautiful young man who was loved by a middle-class citizen named Aristogeiton, but was also loved by Hipparchus, the brother of the tyrant Hippias, who feared that the brother would use his power to take him away from him. So the two men gathered together and plotted to overthrow the tyranny, which they carried out on the day of the Panathenaea in 514 BC. However, the plot failed, only defeating Hipparchus, and Harmodius was killed on the spot. This is the story told by Thucydides, and in later generations the two men were celebrated as heroes who killed the tyrant.
