Kasai-Osaki Uprising

An uprising of local samurai and farmers occurred in Mutsu Province at the end of the 16th century. In August 1590 (Tensho 18), Toyotomi Hideyoshi's "Oshu Shioki" forced Kasai Harunobu and Osaki Yoshitaka to forfeit their titles, and Kimura Yoshikiyo was given 12 counties of his former territory stretching from the northern part of Miyagi Prefecture to the southern part of Iwate Prefecture, and entered Toyoma Castle. In early October in Kami County, former Osaki retainers and upper-class farmers who opposed the use of horse-drawn carriages resisted with swords, and more than 30 were crucified. Soon, uprisings broke out in the Isawa, Kesen, and Iwai counties of the former Kasai territory, and in the middle of the month in Tamazukuri County of the former Osaki territory. The uprising then spread to the entire former Kasai and Osaki territories, and Yoshikiyo and his son Kiyohisa were surrounded at Sanuma Castle in Toyoma County.

16世紀末，陸奥国におきた地侍･農民の一揆。1590年(天正18)8月，豊臣秀吉の〈奥羽仕置〉によって葛西晴信，大崎義隆は改易となり，木村吉清が現在の宮城県北部から岩手県南部にわたる旧領12郡を与えられて登米（とよま）城に入った。10月初め加美郡で，伝馬役に反対する大崎旧臣や上層農民が刀をもって抵抗し30余人が磔に処されたが，まもなく葛西旧領の胆沢･気仙･磐井諸郡，続いて中旬には旧大崎領の玉造郡に一揆がおき，さらに葛西･大崎旧領全域に一揆は波及し，吉清･清久父子は登米郡佐沼城に包囲された。
