Adolphe

An autobiographical psychological novel by French author Benjamin Constant. Published in 1816. Adolphe, a young man from a distinguished family, seduces his friend's concubine out of a desire to conquer, but soon begins to feel her love is a burden. The woman returns to her native Poland, and the young man, out of a sense of duty, shares her fate. However, there are constant quarrels between the two, and the woman dies in agony. Written as a diary by a young man living alone and filled with regret, this work relentlessly analyzes the intersection of various emotions surrounding love, and finally shows the impossibility of love itself. Through the sophisticated and solid classical style, we can read the narrator's strict ethics behind the protagonist's indecisive thoughts and actions, as he faces the weakness of human nature squarely and at the same time tries to condemn it. It has had a great influence on later generations as a book of cold-hearted self-analysis and as a representative work of early romanticism that preaches about the fatigue of life and the transience of love. It is said that the female protagonist, Eleanor, is heavily influenced by Madame de Stael.

フランスの作家バンジャマン・コンスタンの自伝的心理小説。1816年発表。名家の青年アドルフは、征服欲から友人の妾(めかけ)を誘惑するが、やがて女の愛を負担に感じるようになる。女は故国ポーランドに帰り、青年は義務感から運命をともにする。しかし2人の間にはいさかいが絶えず、女は苦悶(くもん)の果てに死ぬ。悔恨に包まれ孤独に生きる青年の手記という形式のこの作品は、愛にまつわるさまざまの情念の交錯する場を執拗(しつよう)なまでに分析し、ついに愛そのものの不可能性を示すに至る。精巧かつ堅固な古典的文体を通して、主人公の優柔不断な思考や言動の背後に、人間本来の弱さを正視し、同時に断罪しようとする語り手の厳しい倫理性を読み取ることができる。冷徹な自己分析の書として、また生の倦怠(けんたい)と愛のはかなさを説く初期ロマン派の代表作として、後世に与えた影響は大きい。女主人公エレノールには、スタール夫人の影が濃くさしているといわれる。
