Turkic script - Tokketsumoji

An ancient Turkish script used in Turkic inscriptions. It is generally believed that, with the exception of a few newly invented characters, most of it is based on the Semitic Aramaic alphabet, but recent research suggests that the Turkic script originated from the Sogdian alphabet. As it closely matches Turkish in phonology and other respects, the adoption of this script is thought to date back considerably to the 8th century, when the Turkic inscriptions were made. Some scholars believe it was adopted around the 5th century. It was deciphered in 1893 by the Danish linguist Thomsen (1842-1927).

突厥碑文で用いられている古代トルコ文字。新しく創出されたいくつかの文字を除き、大部分はセム語系のアラム字母に基づくとされるのが通説であるが、最近の研究によると、突厥文字の起源はソグド文字にあると思われる。音韻その他の点でトルコ語に巧みに適合しているので、この文字の採用は突厥碑文の立てられた8世紀をかなりさかのぼると思われる。5世紀ごろの採用と考える学者もいる。1893年デンマークの言語学者トムセン（1842―1927）が解読した。
