Shimazu Sadahisa

A military commander during the late Kamakura and Nanboku-cho periods. He was called Saburozaemon-no-jo and Kazusa-no-suke. His Buddhist name was Dokan. His father was Tadamune and his mother was the daughter of Miike Mokko Kaikan Michitomo. In 1318 (Bunpo 2), he succeeded his father as the Shugo of Satsuma Province. In May 1333 (Genko 3), following the orders of Ashikaga Takauji, he attacked and defeated Chinzei Tandai Hojo Hidetoki together with the Shoni and Otomo clans. In June of the same year, he was granted the position of Shugo of Hyuga Province. In April of the following year, he was granted the position of Shugo of Osumi Province. When the Nanboku-cho civil war began, he sided with Takauji and fought against the Imperial Court, led by Kimotsuki Kaneshige. In 1342 (Kōei 1), when Prince Kaneyoshi entered Satsuma, Sadahisa attacked Taniyama Castle, his base, and also captured Tofukuji and Saibaraku Castle. Prince Kaneyoshi left for Higo before he could establish his influence in southern Kyushu. When the Kan'o Disturbance began, he was active in the Takauji faction and fought with Hatakeyama Naoaki, who supported the Naoyoshi faction, over control of the Hyuga and Osumi regions. In April 1363 (the 2nd year of the Jōji era), he divided his estates among his sons. Michihisa, who was given the position of Satsuma Shugoshiki, became the ancestor of the Sōshū Shimazu clan, and Ujihisa, who was given the position of Osumi Shugoshiki, became the ancestor of the Oshu Shimazu clan. He died in July of the same year at the age of 95. There are differing theories about his age.

鎌倉後期・南北朝時代の武将。三郎左衛門尉,上総介を称す。法名は道鑑。父は忠宗,母は三池木工介入道道智の娘。文保2(1318)年,父の跡を襲い,薩摩国守護となる。元弘3(1333)年5月,足利尊氏の命に従い,少弐氏,大友氏らと鎮西探題北条英時を攻め滅ぼす。同年6月,日向国守護職を得る。翌年4月,さらに大隅国守護職を得る。南北朝内乱が始まると,尊氏側に与して肝付兼重らの宮方と戦う。康永1(1342)年,懐良親王が薩摩に入国すると,貞久はその本拠谷山城を攻め,また東福寺・催馬楽城を陥れた。懐良親王は南九州に勢力を扶植できぬうちに肥後に去った。観応の擾乱が始まると尊氏党として活動し,直義党に与した畠山直顕と日向・大隅地方の支配をめぐって争った。貞治2(1363)年4月,所領を子息に分与。薩摩守護職を与えられた師久は総州家島津氏の,大隅国守護職を与えられた氏久は奥州家島津氏の祖となった。同年7月に95歳で死去。年齢については異説もある。
