Around 1613-96 An Italian art theorist of the Baroque period who took a position of classicism. Born in Rome. A collector of ancient Roman art and an archaeologist, his art theory books and biographies of painters (such as Lives of Contemporary Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, 1672) had a strong influence on art academies from the 17th to 19th centuries. He took a position of Platonist idealism, praising Raphael, Carracci, and N. Poussin, and rejecting Caravaggio and GL Bernini.
