… The Badami Chalukya dynasty (early Western Chalukya dynasty) was founded by Pulakeśin I in the mid-6th century with Badami as its capital, and continued until the mid-8th century. The second and third kings, Kirtivarman I and Mangaleśa, the son of the first king, expanded the dynasty's territory, but when a civil war arose over the succession to the throne, Pulakeśin II, the son of the second king, killed his uncle Mangaleśa around 610, put down the civil war, and ascended to the throne. The king conquered the Kadamba dynasty and prevented the advance of Harsha Vardhana, who was powerful in northern India at the time, into the Deccan, thereby solidifying the foundation of the dynasty by controlling the forces of all sides. …
