Naganuma Moriyoshi - Naganuma Moriyoshi

Sculptor. Born in Ichinoseki, Mutsu (Iwate Prefecture) in 1858. He played a leading role in the world of Western-style sculpture due to his solid techniques of the official school. In 1874 (Meiji 7), he moved to Tokyo and worked at the Italian Embassy, ​​and in 1881 accompanied the envoy on his return to Italy, where he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, graduating in 1885 and returning to Japan in 1887. In 1889, he participated in the founding of the Meiji Art Association as the only sculptor and became a member. He served as a judge for the 3rd Domestic Industrial Exposition in 1890 and has served as a judge ever since. In 1898, he became a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he worked hard to establish a new plastic modeling department within the school's sculpture department, but resigned soon after. He served as a judge since the founding of the Literature Exhibition in 1908 (Meiji 41). His most famous work is "Lao Husband" (1898), which won a gold medal at the 1900 Paris World's Fair. He died on July 18, 1942 in Tateyama, Chiba Prefecture.

彫刻家。安政(あんせい)4年陸奥(むつ)一ノ関（岩手県）に生まれる。官学派の堅実な技法により、洋風彫刻界で指導的役割を果たした。1874年（明治7）上京してイタリア公使館に勤務し、81年公使の帰国に同行してイタリアに渡り、ベネチア王立美術学校に学び、85年卒業、87年に帰国した。89年明治美術会の創立にただ1人の彫刻家として参加し、会員となった。90年に第3回内国勧業博覧会の審査員を務めて以来、審査員を歴任。98年東京美術学校の教授となり、同校彫刻科の塑造科新設に尽力したが、まもなく辞任した。1908年（明治41）文展開設以来審査員を務めた。1900年のパリ万国博に出品して金牌(きんぱい)を得た『老夫』（1898）が代表作。昭和17年7月18日千葉県館山(たてやま)で没。
