Easy-to-keep species suitable for beginners include the pearl gourami, blue gourami, kissing gourami, and paradise fish in the tree-climbing fish family, the neon tetra, cardinal tetra, black tetra, glowlight tetra, sarpe tetra, and congo tetra in the characins family, the blue akara, severum, fire mouse, Egyptian mouse breeder, angelfish, and yellow cichlid in the cichlid family, the golden barb, Sumatra, cherry barb, zebra danio, pearl danio, leopard danio, and rasbora in the carp family, the guppy, various platys, swordtails, and black mollies in the live-bearing killifish family, and the small corydoras in the catfish family. Most of the above species are docile in nature, and can be kept with other species except when breeding.
