Hawfinch - Hawfinch (English spelling)
A passerine bird of the family Fringillidae (illustration). It is slightly larger than a sparrow, with a total length of about 18 cm. It is a stocky gray-brown bird with a large conical beak. The sexes are almost the same color. The head is dark brown, and the eyes and throat are black. The tip of the tail is white, which opens slightly when flying, making it conspicuous, and the two white stripes on the wings are also clearly visible. The beak has a sharp tip and is whitish-yellow in winter, but turns leaden in summer. It moves slowly. It is distributed widely in the temperate and subarctic zones of Eurasia. In Japan, it breeds in Hokkaido and spends the winter in areas south of Honshu.
