German pedagogue and reformer. After graduating from a temporary teacher training school, he became an assistant teacher at an elementary school, but realized that he lacked academic ability and transferred to a gymnasium. At the age of 23, he qualified to enter university and studied humanities, mathematics, and natural sciences at the University of Munich and the Higher Technical School. After working as a gymnasium teacher, he became a school official in Munich (1895-1919). He supported E. Spranger's position on cultural philosophy, and considered the basic concepts of pedagogy to be cultivation, interest, and value, with values taking the highest position. He advocated the principle of labor as a practical method of cultivation, and based on this principle, he tried to promote the Arbeitsschule, a labor school that cultivates civic cultivation, by minimizing knowledge education and focusing on vocational education that gives skill and the joy of labor. In 1918, he was appointed honorary professor at the University of Munich. His main work is "The Concept of Civic Education" (The Begriff der staatbürgerlichen Erziehung) (10).

ドイツの教育学者，教育改革家。臨時教員養成所を卒業後小学校の助教員となったが，学力の不足を痛感してギムナジウムに編入学，23歳のとき大学入学資格を獲得し，ミュンヘン大学および高等工業学校において人文科学，数学，自然科学を学び，ギムナジウムの教師を経てミュンヘン市の学務官となる (1895～1919) 。 E.シュプランガーの文化哲学の立場を支持し，教育学の基本概念を陶冶，興味，価値とし，価値観念を最高位においた。陶冶の実践方法として労作の原理を主張し，この原理に基づいて知識教育を最小量にとどめ，熟練，労作の喜悦を与える職業教育を中心とし，公民的陶冶を培う労作学校 Arbeitsschuleの普及に努力した。 1918年ミュンヘン大学栄誉教授に選任された。主著『公民教育の概念』 Der Begriff der staatbürgerlichen Erziehung (10) 。
