Travels to Song China

A travelogue from the late Heian period. 1 volume. Monk Kaikakuki. This is a record of the Tendai monk Kaikaku, who aspired to make a pilgrimage to Mount Tiantai and Mount Wutai in China, from his boarding a ship at Hakata-tsu in Chikuzen Province on September 5, 1082 (the second year of the Eiho era) to his being granted permanent residence at Shinyo-in Temple on Mount Godai on June 15 of the following year. Although it is an excerpt, it sheds light on Kaikaku's actions, who was previously known only from one poem in the Bandai Wakashu, and together with the Record of a Trip to Tendai Mount Godai by Shojin (died 1081), who had traveled to Song China just before, it is a valuable historical document for the time. Copied by Jitsuson in 1229 (Kanki 1), kept by the Imperial Household Agency. [Hirabayashi Moritoku]

平安時代後期の旅行記。1巻。僧戒覚記。中国天台山･五台山の巡礼を志した天台僧戒覚が，永保2年(1082)9月5日筑前国博多津の乗船から，翌年6月15日五台山真容院に永住を認められるまでの記。抄出本であるが，従来《万代和歌集》に1首の歌が知られるだけの戒覚の行動が明らかとなり，直前の入宋者成尋(1081没)の《参天台五台山記》と合わせて当代の貴重な史料である。1229年(寛喜1)実尊写，宮内庁蔵。【平林盛得】
