Midhat Paşa

A politician who played a major role in the establishment of the first constitutional system of the Ottoman Empire (1876). Born in Istanbul, he entered the government at the age of 18. He rose steadily through the ranks, serving as Speaker of the National Assembly (1868) and Governor of Baghdad Province (1869). In 1872, he was appointed Grand Vizier (Sadrazam), but resigned after only three months. After that, he fell out of favor with the Sultan, but in May 1876, with the help of the military, he succeeded in the abdication of Sultan Abdul Aziz and the accession of Murad V to the throne.

オスマン帝国の第1次立憲制樹立(1876)に大きな役割を果たした政治家。イスタンブールに生まれ，18歳で官界に入った。以後着実に昇進し，国家会議議長(1868)，バグダード州知事(1869)等を歴任。1872年には大宰相(サドラザム)に任じられたが，わずか3ヵ月で辞任した。その後，スルタンに疎まれて不遇時代を送ったが，76年5月，軍隊の協力も得てスルタン，アブデュルアジーズの退位，ムラト5世の即位に成功した。
