A village in Sorachi County, Sorachi Subprefecture, central Hokkaido. Population 4,131 (1995). Located in the center of the Ishikari Plain, on the east bank of the Ishikari River, bordering Iwamizawa City to the south. In 1894, Kitamura Yuji, a native of Yamanashi Prefecture, was leased 500 hectares of land here, established a tenant farm, and began full-scale development. The village's name comes from the name of this farm. The area is prone to flooding, and suffered particularly severe floods in 1898 and 1932. The area of paddy fields increased dramatically with the Hokkai Doko Association project in 1928 and the national irrigation project after World War II, and the area developed into a rice-growing farming village.
